Nyiwung Valery Colong, Tech Lead (AMIS): On Mobile Phones, SMS, & Farming in Cameroon, Africa

We met up with Nyiwung Valery Colong, Technology Lead for AMIS (Agricultural Marketing Information Services), in Silicon Valley, California in May 2009 at TechSoupGlobal’s N2Y4 Conference. AMIS is a project that uses SMS technology and mobile phones to deliver real-time information services to farmers in Cameroon, Africa. The project was a N2Y4 Mobile Challenge finalist, and won an honorary prize at the N2Y4 event.

We had a chance to talk with Valery at the conference – in this interview, Valery explains how mobile phones and SMS are being used in Cameroon to help farmers get the info they need to better position themselves in the market place, and get important info on weather, pricing, and consumer demand.
